But I can't justify having to spend another $800 on rear tires.

If you have a car that can do that. You don't need to worry about tire cost. :)

10 y/o CL55 AMG It can manage this with proper braking. And thanks to the ridiculous depreciation, I didn't pay anything near what the original owner paid for it :)

Junkyard. Buy a set of wheels that fit your car for around $60 for all four. Good for one round of hooning, then sell the rims to break even.

That's a damn good idea. I had planned on roasting the last set just before getting the ones I have now but a nail in the sidewall ruined that idea.

If I ever end up with access to a empty closed parking lot (or similar) I really want to do that.

I was always curious; does dumping the clutch quickly to burn rubber hurt your driveline more than slipping the clutch a little? I think it must come down to wearing out your gears vs. wearing out your clutch.

I wish I knew the answer. My car is a 5 speed auto. But 493 hp and 517 ft-lbs of torque have a way of making the tires smoke. Destroys the rear pads though if I'm using the brakes to control forward momentum while spinning the tires. I already have a set of EBC Red Stuff pads waiting to go on.
My guess is it would wear the clutch more than anything else.

Found a empty strip of road on a Vegas trip and tried it. But the heat hurt me two fold. 1 the asphalt and tires were incredibly hot which made the Pilot Super Sports stickier than I expected. 2 the IAT was high enough that the ECU pulled timing and therefore power. Supercharged engine with a failing intercooler pump make for horrible hot weather performance.
